What Is the CRS Score?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to rank Express Entry candidates. Your CRS score determines your position in the Express Entry pool and whether you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency. The maximum possible CRS score is 1,200 points.

How Is the CRS Score Calculated?

Your CRS score is based on four main factors: core human capital (age, education, first and second language ability, Canadian work experience), spouse/partner factors, skill transferability combinations (max 100 points), and additional points. For single applicants, the core factors can contribute up to 500 points. Additional factors like a provincial nomination (+600 points), Canadian education (+15 to +30 points), or French language proficiency (+25 to +50 points) can significantly boost your score.

Note: As of March 25, 2025, IRCC removed CRS points for valid job offers. Job offers no longer add 50 or 200 points.

Age (max 110 pts single / 100 with spouse)

Peak points at ages 20-29. Points decrease each year after 30 and reach 0 at 45+.

Education (max 150 pts single / 140 with spouse)

PhD earns the maximum. A Bachelor's degree scores 120/112 points.

Language (max 160 pts: 136 first + 24 second)

Based on CLB levels. First language: up to 34 per skill. Second language: up to 6 per skill.

Skill Transferability (max 100 pts)

Bonus for combining education + language, education + work, or foreign + Canadian experience.

10 Ways to Improve Your CRS Score

1

Get a Provincial Nomination (+600 points)

The single biggest CRS boost. Apply through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) like Ontario's OINP, BC PNP, or Alberta's AAIP.

2

Improve Your Language Scores

Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 can add 40+ points. Retake IELTS or CELPIP and aim for higher band scores.

3

Add a Second Official Language (+6 to +24 pts)

Learning French as a second language (or English if French is first) adds up to 24 core points plus a 25-50 point French bonus.

4

Get a Higher Education Credential

Upgrading from a Bachelor's to a Master's can add 15 points. A PhD adds 30 points over a Bachelor's.

5

Gain Canadian Work Experience

Each additional year of Canadian work experience (up to 5) adds significant points and boosts skill transferability.

6

Learn French (+25 to +50 points)

Strong French skills (CLB 7+ in all abilities) add 25 points, or 50 points combined with strong English.

7

Study in Canada (+15 to +30 points)

A 1-2 year Canadian credential adds 15 points. A 3+ year credential adds 30 points.

8

Apply Under Category-Based Draws

If you qualify for healthcare, STEM, trades, or French draws, cutoffs can be 100+ points lower than general draws.

9

Get Your Credentials Assessed (ECA)

Ensure your foreign education is properly assessed by WES or another designated organization for maximum points.

10

Combine Factors for Skill Transferability

Education + language, education + work experience, or foreign + Canadian work experience combos add up to 100 extra points.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good CRS score for Express Entry in 2026?
A CRS score of 490-530 is typically needed for general Express Entry draws. However, category-based draws (healthcare, STEM, trades, French) can have cutoffs as low as 300-430. Getting a provincial nomination effectively guarantees an invitation since it adds 600 points.
How often are Express Entry draws held?
Express Entry draws are typically held every two weeks. Canada invites between 500 and 8,000 candidates per draw, depending on the draw type and immigration targets.
Do LMIA job offers still give CRS points?
No. As of March 25, 2025, IRCC eliminated CRS points for valid job offers. Previously, a job offer added 50-200 points. This change means language scores, education, and provincial nominations are now even more important for your CRS ranking.
What is the maximum CRS score?
The maximum possible CRS score is 1,200 points. This includes up to 500 points for core human capital factors (460 with a spouse), plus spouse factors, skill transferability (max 100), and additional factors like provincial nominations (600).
How can I improve my CRS score quickly?
The fastest ways: getting a provincial nomination (+600), improving language test scores (retake IELTS/CELPIP), adding a second official language, gaining Canadian work experience, and studying in Canada.
Is the CRS calculator on JobFit accurate?
Our CRS calculator uses the exact IRCC CRS grid with individual age-year points, spouse/single variants, skill transferability, and second language scoring. For an official calculation, create an Express Entry profile on the IRCC website.
